Tokyo's solution to secure commuter bike parking

Follow the above Washington Post link to take a look at this wonderful solution to where to securely leave your bicycle in Tokyo. The city saw a 20% increase in bicycle commuters when they spent $67 million to install this underground system. Why can't we do that here?

very cool, though it seems like it would be a hassle if one of the bikes was caught in the mechanism. Another cool idea is the Paris Velib, they have 1500 rental stations dotted about the city, where you take a bike for a small sum and are allowed to use it for a given amount of time. you just return the bikes to another station nearer your destination.
